Artist’s Hilarious Comics Perfectly Sum Up What It’s Like Growing Up in an Indian Family
A talented Indian design student named Sailesh Gopalan has created a comic series that humorously captures the common quirks and hi-jinks of being in an Indian family.
Based in Mumbai, the 21-year-old comic creator currently studies at the Srishti School of Art Design and Technology in Bangalore, India and does his hilarious webcomic in his free time. He describes his creation, titled “Brown Paperbag”, aptly as “a slice-of-life comedy webcomic aimed at highlighting the ironies and exploiting the stereotypes that prevail in Indian families and society in a satirical fashion.”
“Didn’t Work Out”
And while most of what Gopalan portrays is distinctly Indian in each piece, with many recognizable cultural references injected, the webcomic’s universal appeal has attracted a global fanbase. “Brown Paperbag” has only been up since June 2016 but its Facebook page and dedicated Instagram account have already amassed a combined following of over 150,000 fans.
In an interview with Bored Panda, he revealed his inspirations to create the comic as being “One Piece” creator/artist Eiichiro Oda, Shen of Bluechair and Owlturd Comix and Sarah Andersen of Sarah’s Scribbles.
“Play The Blame Game, Blame The Game Play”
“I’ve always been interested in drawing comics,” Gopalan was quoted as saying. “I used to fill up my drawing books with my own comics as a kid, and that interest never died out.”
For those who also want to start their own webcomic, Gopalan has a very straightforward advice:
“Upload! Don’t let your inhibitions keep you from sharing your work with the world. I had no idea my comics would receive the response it did, and the only way I could know is if I put it up on the internet.”
