AZIZAH MAY NOT MIND BEING PM ‘SEAT WARMER’ FOR ANWAR BUT MALAYSIANS DO: IN CRITICAL TIMES, ONLY AN IRON HAND LIKE DR M CAN TOPPLE NAJIB
KUALA LUMPUR – PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said she doesn’t mind holding the prime ministership temporarily until her husband and the Opposition party’s real leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is released from jail.
In an interview with Al Jazeera on its Upfront programme, the parliamentary Opposition Leader added that she would willingly make way for Anwar once he is free and able to return to active politics if the Pakatan Harapan pact wins the 14th general elections due next year.
“I don’t mind, yes,” Dr Wan Azizah said when asked if she is accepting to the idea of being a “seat warmer” for Anwar, who is currently serving a five-year jail sentence for sodomy.
“Because I think frankly he is a better leader. He is a better administrator. He’s the better guy for the job. Why not?” she said when asked why she would settle to become a “proxy” for Anwar.
The comment was part of a video snippet posted this morning on the programme’s Facebook page that has since garnered over 41,000 views. The full interview is scheduled to be shown on May 12 at 7.30pm GMT (May 13, 3.30am Malaysian time).
PKR strategists in the past have suggested that Dr Wan Azizah become prime minister should Pakatan Harapan win the elections, and later pave way for Anwar if he is released and obtains a pardon, enabling him to return to active politics.
Anwar was incarcerated at the Sungai Buloh Prison on February 10, 2015 after the Federal Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s conviction ruling.
He is due for release in early 2020; but he may also be allowed out as early as next year based on remittance of his jail term where one-third of their jail term is shaved off and they are given early release.
