BMW has released a wild line of concept vehicles that explores how driving will evolve in the next 100 years.
The German automaker has so far unveiled three cars and two motorcycles for its Vision Next 100 line, all of which highlight a commitment to self-driving tech and electric vehicles. But the concepts also showcase more bizarre technology, like clothing designed to turn on certain features in a vehicle.
Scroll down for a closer look:
1. The Mini Vision Next 100 concept car is designed for a future where ride-sharing is commonplace.
The car has an AI assistant that can recognize regular passengers and greet them with a light-up sign.
The interior is very minimalist and clear of any clutter. A heads-up display will show relevant information like navigation and speed.
The car is capable of driving itself. When its autonomous mode is activated, the steering wheel will move to the center of the dashboard.
2. Next is BMW’s Vision Next 100. We’re crazy about the concept’s wheels, which make this beautiful fluid motion when you turn the steering wheel.
The car comes with two driving modes: Boost Mode for classic, manual driving and Ease Mode for autonomous driving.
The vehicle also comes with a heads-up display that will show alerts and information about the drive.
The steering wheel will retract into the dashboard when the car is driving itself.
The concept also comes with an AI assistant called Companion that will customize the car to the driver’s liking. It will even communicate with pedestrians when driving autonomously.
3. But perhaps the coolest car in BMW’s Vision Next 100 line is the completely autonomous Rolls-Royce concept, the 103EX.
There’s no steering wheel since the car is completely driverless. Passengers can sit back and relax on a comfy, silk sofa while the car drives itself.
The vehicle comes with an OLED TV screen that takes up the entire front wall of the cabin.
The doors open automatically when passengers are ready to start their trip.
There’s even a secret compartment to store luggage.
The concept comes with its own AI assistant named Eleanor that can alert passengers of upcoming appointments and provide updates about a trip’s progress.
4. BMW unveiled its first motorcycle concept, the Vision Next 100 Motorrad, last October. It features a continuous frame so that turning the handlebars moves the entire bike.
The motorcycle has a set of massive wheels so it won’t tip over it’s motionless.
It comes with a pair of complimentary augmented reality glasses that display relevant information, like the scooter’s current speed, directly in front of the rider’s point of view.
Even the owner’s gear is high-tech. BMW design a suit that’s embedded with sensors, which will vibrate when a vehicle is approaching on the right or left.
5. The German automaker seems particular committed to designing the motorcycle of the future. On Friday, BMW unveiled a new, all-electric scooter concept.
The scooter features two touchscreens. The one in-between the handle bars shows the driver battery information, navigation, and speed. The display directly below the handle bars handles secondary information, like music options.
The bike comes with a complimentary jacket that can activate a secret luggage door.
BMW doesn’t intend to produce these vehicles and put them up for sale. But they highlight different tech features that the automaker may explore in its mainstream vehicles in the future.
