California Assemblyman Evan Low Formally Calls for Trump’s Resignation

Assemblyman Evan Low (D-Campbell) of the California Legislature has introduced a resolution that calls for President Donald Trump’s resignation from office and urges Congress to impeach him when he refuses.

The resolution, AJR 17, cites Trump’s actions as deemed inappropriate by critics, such as his persistent involvement in business dealings and rumors over his leaking of classified information to Russia, the Los Angeles Times noted.

The formal measure comes at a time when Democrats are becoming more vocal on impeachment discussions. While Low had drafted the resolution several months back, he only submitted it after Trump’s firing of James B. Comey as FBI director.

Prior to his firing, Comey was reportedly asked by the president to end the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

“Amid the gross incompetence, recklessness and overwhelming conflicts of interest, we can’t wait for the next shoe to drop,” Low said in a statement. “It’s time to stand up and do something about it.”

The resolution is heading down a challenging road, however. Other than the unlikely event that President Trump chooses to leave the White House, Congress, which holds the sole authority to run the impeachment processes, is controlled by Republicans.

“There is a crisis of confidence in the Trump presidency and it is jeopardizing our global standing. I can no longer wait and see if Congress will take action,” Low pointed.

With California Democrats ready to take down Trump any minute, some have called for restraint, such as Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount), who thought they should not be reacting to everything the president does.

Low sees his responsibility for the country, nevertheless:

“There are many issues that affect individuals in their daily lives. At the same time, we have an obligation to our country and it’s important… to call it as we see it.”
