A firm in China found a lucrative way to motivate their employees to lose weight. The Xian Jingtian Investment Consulting in Shaanxi Province decided to implement a reward system program wherein workers are given cash incentives for the amount of weight they lose.
The company boss, Chairman Wang Xuebao, said that they started the program aiming to “form a culture and engage in healthy competition” as well as making sure that their employees are at a healthy weight.
“I was distressed because our company’s employees are often sitting in the office, and they don’t move around enough – myself included – so they are overweight,” Wang said.
The “healthy weight loss” program, which was launched last March, will reward employees $14 for every kilogram they lose. In order to qualify, there is a minimum initial weight loss of 3 kilograms (6.6 lb) required, according to Daily Mail.
However, the irony is that although Xuebao said that he aims to lose weight to be able to enter the program he started, he has not been able to shed some weight off. However, some of his employees, like Zhou Wei, have earned up to 2000 yuan ($290) for losing 20 kg (44 lb) so far.
South China Morning Post pointed out that the company’s weight loss program is another case that reflects China’s overcritical concerns about body image.
There are many Chinese who are under pressure to achieve the “ideal” body size and experts warn about the dangers of doing extreme dieting and exercises which could not only harm a person physically but also affect the way they think about their bodies.
