KUALA LUMPUR— Selangor lawmaker Wong Chen today criticised the PKR-led state government for conducting an audit on his office without “due process or natural justice”.
The first-term MP for Kelana Jaya who had his office audited for the spending of his annual RM250,000 allocation as a federal lawmaker in the state said that the findings of the audit by the Selangor Treasury were “baseless”.
“I am releasing a full disclosure report on a matter that has been upsetting and annoying my office for the last three and a half months,” the PKR representative said in a Facebook posting.
In his post, he provided a timeline of his dispute with the Selangor Treasury over the audit, which was conducted in March 2016 but was only submitted to the Petaling District and Land Office in February this year.
He claimed his office was “stonewalled” by the state government for the past three-and-a-half months.
“Many of you are aware that I don’t have a particularly good relationship with the Selangor administration.
“I admit that I have many personal faults; I am not particularly patient and am extremely blunt with my views. But being corrupt or running a disorganised office are not some of them,” he said.
However, he admitted that the audit findings did not allege any misappropriation in his office but instead had asked the Petaling District and Land Office to urge his office to prepare a budget proposal and to compel his office to spend more money on small projects.
It also said that Wong’s office had failed to comply with some state government guidelines.
“In fact, we strongly object to all the audit findings, which in our opinion, some are completely baseless and some can be clarified easily by asking my staff and requesting for documents,” he said.
“Instead of carrying out a proper, transparent and fair audit, this mystery audit rushed to findings without due process to paint an untrue picture of my office’s administration,” he added.
Wong said that his office had replied in detail to all of the findings of the audit report, but no reply was forthcoming from the authorities up until now.
“This very long disclosure is made for public record purposes and to defend the good reputation of my staff and my office,” he said.
Wong also said that the public disclosure was made after the state failed to reply to Wong’s demand that a new audit be conducted and that the findings of the previous audit be retracted.
He also said that he would consider taking legal action against the State Treasury over the audit issue.
“My office reserves the right to pursue all legal avenues against the Selangor State Treasury including filing a complaint to the Selangor Public Accounts Committee and/or the Selangor Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency,” he added.
