Cassandra Hsiao, the Malaysian-born student who made headlines after being accepted in all eight Ivy League universities, has finally decided which school she is heading to.
Hsiao has chosen to go to Yale University. The Straits Times reported that the California-raised teen made her decision on Sunday and announced that she will be pursuing an arts degree with a major in theater at the premier university.
The 17-year-old wants to study writing in theater at Yale and then pursue a career in the arts either in California or New York when she graduates.
“I want to show that Asians are not one story but there are so many stories within that genre to explore. I want to explore identity,” Hsiao said.
Her Taiwanese father and Malaysian mother set the stage early on for their daughter by enrolling her in several arts and music classes as a child.
“We fully support Cassandra’s decision and are excited for the next chapter of her life. This new world will inspire her and I believe she will grow in incredible ways with God’s blessing,” said her mother, Grace Gan.
It is already difficult to get accepted to one Ivy League school, so getting into to all eight of them – Columbia, Harvard, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth College, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale –was an accomplishment worthy of being proud of.
Hsiao’s college essay, which sealed the deal for her, talked about the struggles of learning English while living in an immigrant household.
