A poor Chinese farmer recently made the painful decision to dig a grave for his critically ill daughter and just wait for her death.
The father, named Zhang Liyong, had reportedly spent all the family savings in treating Zhang Xinlei, the two-year-old child diagnosed with a serious blood disorder called thalassemia.
Thalassemia is a condition in which the body produces too little or no hemoglobin, an important component in the blood that red blood cells need to carry oxygen around the body. Treating such condition is a lifelong process that involves multiple blood transfusions.
In their effort to save her, the family has spent over 100,000 yuan ($14,750) since the time the girl was diagnosed at the age of two months.
Zhang appeared to have given up hope because the family could no longer afford her medical bills.
According to the Daily Mail, he decided to dig his beloved daughter’s grave to “prepare her for her death.”
The heartbreaking story, which happened in Neijiang city, Sichuan province is featured in a now viral video clip that is making the rounds on Chinese social media.
In the footage, it was revealed that the father brings his sick daughter to the grave daily to get her “familiarized with her future burial space.” A scene in the video also showed Zhang and his daughter lying inside the hole in the ground.
After Zhang’s wife became pregnant, however, they found out that they can no longer raise the money they need for the transplant.
“We borrowed money from many, but they are no longer willing to lend us more,” Zhang said.
Deng Min, Zhang’s wife, also felt that they are already in a hopeless situation.
“We have been driven into a corner. There is no other option,” she said.
Resigned to their daughter’s tragic fate, the couple now shifted their focus on preparing Xin Lei for her death.
“I could only come up with this idea – bringing her to play at this place. This is where she will rest in peace. All I can do is accompanying her every day,” said Zhang.
