PETALING JAYA – Following the video clip showing Lee Hsien Loong expressing his side of the story and apologising to Singaporeans over a family dispute that has gone public, his brother has now released a response, The Straits Times reported.
Lee Hsien Yang took to Facebook to explain the one issue that seems to have divided the Lee siblings, their Oxley Road family house, which their father, the island republic’s first prime minister Lee Kuan Yew had wanted to be demolished, according to a will left by Kuan Yew, who died in March 2015.
“We asked a simple question, that he (PM Lee) has refused to answer for a week: Was our father, Lee Kuan Yew, unwavering in his demolition wish?
“Yes or no?”
Hsien Yang added that he and his sister (Wei Ling) were upset that in the video clip, Hsien Loong had alleged that his siblings were not happy the Oxley Road house was left to him, as part of the equal share of Kuan Yew’s estate.
However, the FB post did not seek to clarify the other issues, related to the same house, which Hsien Loong had spoken about.
“Wei Ling and I never had any objection to LHL receiving an equal share of the estate. We object to LHL’s flip-flopping about Lee Kuan Yew’s demolition wish,” he said on FB.
Yesterday, on his first day back at work since the controversy broke last week, Hsien Loong issued a statement and the video.
In the video, released by the Singapore Prime Minister’s Office, Hsien Loong announced that he was also going to release a ministerial statement after the Singapore parliament sitting starts on July 3, as his siblings had made “baseless accusations” against the government.
“These serious allegations went beyond private and personal matters, extending to the conduct of my office and the integrity of the government.
“Much as I would like to move on, and end a most unhappy experience for Singaporeans, these baseless accusations against the government cannot be left unanswered. They must be and will be dealt with openly and refuted,” Hsien Loong said.
He added that he had done everything possible to avoid the dispute and had wanted to settle his siblings’ unhappiness privately.
In the video, Hsien Loong also explained how an offer to transfer the house to his sister for a nominal S$1 was not turned down, so, he sold his house to his brother at a “fair market valuation” and donated all the proceeds to charity.
“I had hoped that this would satisfy them. There should be no reason for any further quarrel, since I no longer own the house and I do not take part in any government decisions on the house.”
