THE internal strife in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is caused by people planted in the party by its political rivals, deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir said.
He said the party had suspected this was “planned right from the beginning” to damage Bersatu and its leaders’ credibility, causing voters to think the party could not get its act right and had serious internal bickering.
“It is very clear to us that there are some elements, unfortunately, within the party who were intentionally put there by our rivals, particularly Umno.
“We kind of expected this. It has been happening a bit more often lately, and we expect there will be more when the election draws nearer,” he told reporters in Penang this evening.
Now, Armada (Bersatu’s youth wing) exco member Hafiz Azhar has issued a statement asking party chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad to explain the wealth of his children. Hafiz has been referred to the party’s disciplinary board for investigation.
Mukhriz, who is Dr Mahathir’s youngest son, said Bersatu members with positions took an oath to protect the interest of the party, and violating the oath was a serious matter.
However, Bersatu, which was only founded August last year, had no problems with being transparent, he said.
“We should ask them the same question, if they are willing to be transparent too. From what I hear, as soon as they make press statements like this, almost the next day they will be driving a new car,” he said.
Mukhriz, a former deputy minister and then Kedah menteri besar in his Umno days, said the Bersatu leadership had been addressing issues raised against them and the party, but there were more pressing matters that needed answers.
“What the people want to know are the FGV and RM9.5 million issues. There are still no answers when those are more important matters since they involve the present government.
“If we want to talk about being transparent, it would be good for those in the government to provide answers,” he said referring to the Felda Global Ventures crisis and the RM9.5 million Prime Minister Najib Razak allegedly transferred to Umno lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.
Mukhriz earlier joined other Pakatan Harapan leaders in a Penang government-organised buka puasa event at the Kubang Semang mosque in Permatang Pauh. He said in his speech that the PH coalition members were all working very well together.
PKR president and Permatang Pauh MP Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in her speech said Malaysians must not destroy the harmony the nation had enjoyed. She urged the people to strengthen their faith and struggle for justice and a change for a better future.
Her daughter, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, also spoke on defending unity and preserving Permatang Pauh as a model of friendship and unity for the country.
Also present were Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, DAP parliamentary opposition leader Lim Kit Siang, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and other national and state PH leaders.
The event, which also saw Islamic schools, maahad tahfiz and kindergartens from around Penang receive aid from the state government, proceeded without disruption.
Recently, Muslim group Jaringan Muslimin Pulau Pinang threatened to protest in front of mosques where Guan Eng joined Muslims to break fast. They said Guan Eng had no business joining such events when he did not fast like Muslims and his administration had allegedly interfered in Islamic affairs.
