THEY may not all be fans of Dr Mahathir Mohamad but youth leaders stood up for him and accused Putrajaya of selective prosecution by reopening investigations into the forex losses which occurred more than 20 years ago but ignoring the 1MDB scandal.
They said the Najib administration fears Dr Mahathir’s popularity and is taking steps to confuse opposition Pakatan Harapan supporters.
The youth leaders told The Malaysian Insight that Putrajaya’s announcement on the setting up of the Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate Bank Negara’s forex losses was a distraction from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal.
The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has mounted civil suits in a bid to recover billions of ringgit allegedly siphoned off the state investor.
Student activist Adam Adli said he is not surprised that Putrajaya would act on the forex losses instead of 1MDB, as Prime Minister Najib Razak “would not want to dig his own grave” by ordering an investigation into the state investor.
“Whatever the government is doing right now (the RCI), it is never about making things right. What can you get out of the RCI on a cold case like this?
“It is merely a political ploy by Najib against Dr Mahathir, as well as to disorientate the opposition and their supporters. The RCI is Najib’s political tool,” Adam said.
Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) strategic bureau head Ho Chi Yang said digging into a case more than two decades old only showed the hypocrisy of the Barisan Nasional government.
A scandal involving the country’s top leader is being ignored,” Ho said, adding he sees this as a stunt to divert people’s attention and a ploy to undermine the opposition.
“The only way for the government to show its sincerity in combating corruption is by investigating both cases.”
Universiti Malaya student Anis Syafiqah Mohd Yusof said the 1MDB scandal is being investigated in other countries, such as the United States, Switzerland, Singapore, Luxembourg and Hong Kong.
She said it is so obvious that the latest RCI is politically motivated as it is only conducted after 23 years.
“And as long as Dr Mahathir is ready to be investigated, we should support this latest RCI, but the government must also be pressured to investigate 1MDB,” she said.
Youth lobby group Challenger secretary-general Jean Vaneisha Ravindran agreed with Anis, saying this investigation should have been a long time ago.
“The 1MDB scandal is immediate and on a scale so large that it has involved the seizure of assets stolen from several countries. These assets were purchased by our money, for personal use.
“Where is the crackdown in our own country? There is too much focus on the political appeal of decisions as opposed to the actual addressing of the current distrust most citizens have of our government institutions.
“We are of the stand that the investigation should certainly be on 1MDB,” she said.
Student activist Asheeq Ali from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia took a slightly different stand when he blamed Dr Mahathir for “starting all the problems”.
He said while it was hypocritical of the government to set up the RCI on the forex losses, and ignore the 1MDB scandal, the opposition pact should also be cautious with Dr Mahathir, who started all the problems.
“He was from BN. I will not be influenced by the outcome of the RCI but I think the opposition should take note on how to deal with Dr Mahathir and his cronies,” Asheeq said.
Adam said the attacks by the government was not only meant for Dr Mahathir but it was also directed at the rest of the PH leaders.
“Dr Mahathir is still an effective threat against Najib. I’m more concerned about how will the rest of Pakatan leaders react to this fiasco.
“Dr Mahathir is stronger today because he managed to get the support of Pakatan.
“So by exposing and demonising Dr Mahathir through the RCI, Umno is basically asking Pakatan this: ‘Are you okay with this corrupt guy?’.”
