AS other countries pursue legal action against people linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal, Malaysia must not be a nation that protects criminals, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said.
He said in a Facebook post today that it was baffling that the Singapore investigation into the 1MDB scandal could find wrongdoing but Malaysian investigators had found none.
A Singapore court on Thursday sentenced 33-year-old, Yeo Jiawei, a former wealth manager at the Swiss-based private bank BSI to four-and-half years in jail for cheating and obstructing justice in a money laundering investigation linked to 1MDB.
“The Singapore court has been consistent with what they said all this while that there is sufficient evidence of money laundering involving 1MDB money and those involved must be charged,” said Muhyiddin, who was sacked by Prime Najib Razak over his frequent criticisms of 1MDB’s dealings.
“It is surprising that the Singapore authorities were able to find enough evidence to charge Yeo with a crime, but not in Malaysia, where the attorney-general was unable to find any evidence to initiate a prosecution on those involved in the scandal.”

Muhyiddin said authorities in Singapore have also ordered BSI Bank and Falcon Bank to cease operations in the country, and had fined several banks for its involvement on the 1MDB money laundering scandal involving billions of Ringgit.
“This is why a Royal Commission of Inquiry on 1MDB must be established immediately to investigate the country’s biggest financial scandal in history and bring those responsible, along with public officers protecting them to court.”
